When in Rome! In Florida, not only are they known for their seafood but also their Cuban food, due to a large representation of the Cuban community there. Heading over to Padrino’s was a must with some of their Cuban food being recommended by many locals.
The portions at Padrino’s Cuban Bistro are large to say the least and after having an appetizer, getting the rest of the food in was next to impossible. Thank goodness for take-away boxes.
I absolutely loved their Cuban sampler that had some empanadas, croquetas and tostones. A delightful mix of food that demonstrates what Cuban fare is all about-flavour inspirations from Africa, Mexico, the Caribbean and Taino food.
Unfortunately the sauce for the chilindron de carnero which is a braised lamb shank was overly salty, and masked the flavour of lamb. Because the lamb is literally drowning in the sauce, it was quite difficult to eat and I opted to just take the lamb completely out of the sauce instead.
The seafood paella was much better with a rich diversity of seafood and meat being used in this dish (chicken, scallops, shrimp, mussels, fish, chorizo sausage and langostinos). The yellow rice was perfectly cooked and tender.
A bit of a disappointment with the chilindron de carnero, but I was still overall impressed with the other food, especially the tapas.
Stick to the recommendations of the wait staff and you’ll be fine.
