In the North End of Boston, the most famous style of food is Italian. In the late 1800s, there was a huge surge of Italian immigrants in that area and they built up that community so much, it was soon known as “Little Italy”. Now you can find a number of bakeries, grocery stores and restaurants that are run by Italians and it has become one of Boston’s top tourist spots to hit up.
Right on Hanover Street, there’s this small seafood place called The Daily Catch that serves up mean rustic Italian dishes with fresh seafood as the star of each dish. The Daily Catch is top notch for many of their menu items but their pièce de résistance is definitely their squid ink pasta. I tried the squid ink pasta aglio olio which meant it was tossed in simple garlic, oil and crushed squid. The squid ink gave the pasta a slightly briny flavour to it, lending the flavour of the salty sea. It went very well with the crushed squid that they put in the dish and something I can see complimenting seafood well in general.
Some of the other notable things that this restaurant has are calamari meatballs. Mild in flavour and very tender, these meatballs go very well with their marinara sauce and is quite delicious. I love that this place is small and has a very focused menu with the range of items that they offer. Great quality of seafood and fresh-to-order dishes that will satisfy any carb craving, this is definitely a place I recommend if you’re looking for great homey Italian.
